Devotions / PS 77 Summary

A Summary of the Stanzas of Psalm 77

Rick McNally / Friday, July 18, 2025

Last night during the sleeping portion of my day I kept thinking about Psalm 77 and thinking about how it is a bit of a God given strategy to deal with anxiety and discouragement.

I had a pretty serious panic attack in the night last night. I have had fewer and fewer of them since probably February, but one showed up. My typical way of handling or “grounding” myself has been to distract myself with some trivial bit of information, so I would typically just recite comic book numbers and try to remember the covers of those comic books in order. I can do this with a few titles, but not many. Good distraction, helps you cope with the anxiety of your body.

Lately, I’ve been seeing this Psalm as a good methodology for this as well. It has a few benefits over the comic book cover plan, or whatever plan we might come up with on our own.

  • It is God focused
  • It helps us discern truth from lies
  • It helps us connect God with goodness
  • It helps us connect God with our rescue and salvation
  • It encourages us to see things in perspective

And so, here is my Psalm 77 summary list. I hope it is an encouragement to you. I’m still working through a study of this psalm you can find here on this site.

Below you will find it in text form…

Psalm 77 / God’s Help In Discouragement

In the stanzas of this psalm, God gives us a methodology to deal with discouragement and trouble in our lives. This can help as many as those who will apply it!

  • Cry Out / When you are troubled, God will hear you.
  • Dilligently Search the Word / When you are troubled, seek the Word of God
  • Put Truth over Doubt / When the questions come, think about the truth of the Word
  • Speak of the Goodness of God / Instead of entertaining such questions, speak and think of God’s past actions
  • Remember His Redemption / Remember God’s might and desire of redeeming his people from trouble
  • Remember Their History / Remember how the sea trembled and parted to provide an escape
  • See the Unseen God / The unseen God’s footprints were not seen, but made known by what happened
